Drinkin' Manic Panic
|
Manic Panic is a brand of hair dye well-known for its vivid colors and association with teenagers, especially scene or punk kids of the early to mid 2000s. Drinking Manic Panic is not recommended.
The mention of Manic Panic sets the mood of this verse both in its allusion to adolescence and its invocation of a manic (or panicked) state.
This line also be a play on the trope of the “Manic Pixie Dream Girl” – the girl, herself a manic panic, is drinking.

Smilin' nihilist met / Angry glass half full
|
Nihilism is the philosophical belief that life has no meaning. People who hold this position (called nihilists), are often stereotyped as being gloomy and overtly pessimistic, due to their bleak view on the world.
But many nihilists actually find their belief to be quite liberating, because if life is meaningless and nothing matters, you’re basically free to do whatever you want till the day you die.
This seems to be maintained in these lines, as the nihilist, who is expected to be depressed, is smiling, whereas the person who chooses to find hope and meaning in life, the “glass half full”, is angry.
